Maintain your certification

The Coaching Association of Canada and its partners believe that it is important for NCCP certified coaches to participate in professional development programs that promote values such as lifelong learning and knowledge sharing in the field of coaching.

To maintain certified status, NCCP coaches will need to earn professional development (PD) points. PD points can be earned through many activities that coaches already participate in. In most cases, coaches are already earning the necessary PD points – maintaining certified status is simply a new way to document this point acquisition and recognize the efforts of coaches.

Log in to the Locker to view an up-to-date record of your PD points. For examples of activities that earn PD points, check out these pages and if you have any further questions, check out the FAQ!

NCCP COMMUNITY SPORT/WR LEVEL 1

NCCP Community Sport does not require an assessment. A coach can only receive a “trained” status. A certified status is only available if the coaching course provides an opportunity to be assessed.

A “trained” NCCP Community Initiation coach is not required to accumulate PD points in order to maintain their certification. If a “trained” NCCP Community Initiation coach attends professional development workshops/seminars, etc., this will still be reflected on the coach’s transcript in the Locker section, but as an attendance record.

NCCP COMPETITION – INTRODUCTION/WR LEVEL 2

The NCCP Competition Introduction context involves an assessment. This provides an opportunity for a coach to be assessed and receive the status of “certified”.

The NCCP Competition Introduction “certified” coach must accumulate 20 PD points over a five-year period in order to maintain their certification. If an NCCP Competition Introduction “certified” coach does not accumulate 20 PD points in five years, this will be reflected on their transcript as “certified not renewed”.

In order to renew their certification, a coach will need to obtain the required PD points. Once they have acquired the 20 PD points, their status will be updated from “certified not renewed” to “certified”.

NCCP COMPETITION – DEVELOPMENT/WR LEVEL 3

The Competition-Development context involves an evaluation. A coach therefore has the opportunity to be evaluated and receive the status of “certified”.

The NCCP Competition-Development “certified” coach must accumulate 30 PD points over a five-year period in order to maintain their certification. If an NCCP Competition-Development “certified” coach does not accumulate 30 PD points in five years, it will be reflected on their transcript as “certified not renewed”.

In order to renew their certification, a coach will need to obtain the required PD points. Once they have acquired the 30 PD points, their status will be updated from “certified not renewed” to “certified”.

"Tackle Smart"

The goal of this training is to help prevent injuries during tackling by giving coaches the skills and confidence they need to teach tackling safely and effectively progress toward contact.

After completing the training, participants should be able to:

  • confidently and safely introduce tackling to athletes who are new to contact;

  • clearly understand the rules of the game related to tackling;

  • know how to access resources and support from Rugby Canada and World Rugby regarding tackling;

  • fully understand the purpose of the SMART Tackle approach, which aims to reduce injury rates.

The SMART Tackle program is delivered through in-person practical sessions.
Contact your provincial union to find out when you can register for a practical course in your area.

Activate World Rugby injury prevention exercise program

What is Activate?

Activate is a structured, progressive exercise programme designed to be used in training sessions and pre-match warm-ups.

The programme has been developed using scientific evidence and expert advice, whilst incorporating input from active coaches, ensuring that the programme is suitable for use in all grassroots rugby settings.

To download resources, click HERE

 There are four versions of Activate:
  • Under 15 (ages 13-15)
  • Under 16 (ages 15-16)
  • Under 18 (ages 16-18)
  • Adult (ages 18+)

Each version includes a number of progressive phases for use throughout the season.

All versions of the program follow a similar structure and include the same categories of training activities:

  • balance and hopping exercises, to improve overall control of movement
  • bodyweight and team-mate resistance exercises, to develop lower and upper body strength and control
  • plyometric exercises, to develop lower and upper body power
  • catching and lateral movements, to develop control and technique when performing these activities during play.

Research has shown that the program can reduce the number of muscle and ligament injuries (by 26-40%) and the number of concussions (by 29-60%) in youth and adult amateur rugby players. More frequent use of the program has also reduced the risk of injury further.

What are the benefits of using Activate?

General movement control and skill:

  • Many of the exercises in Activate can help to develop the stability and mobility that are essential to safely and effectively performing various movements during play
  • Physical conditioning and athletic performance: The progressive nature of Activate can help to improve certain athletic performances in players, such as: strength, power, running speed and the ability to change direction effectively
  • Physical resistance: Using Activate can help to develop the ability of muscles, tendons and ligaments to cope with the forces they experience when playing rugby, reducing the risk of injury to these structures when playing rugby and other sports.
